The March 2026 refresh of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) confirms the consolidated list now stands at 456 occupations. CSOL replaced MLTSSL and STSOL in December 2024 and now serves as the primary filter for both:

  • Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa (Core Skills stream)
  • Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (Direct Entry stream)
  • State nomination programs (190 / 491) layered on top, with state-specific exclusions

Three-band salary structure

The Core Skills stream operates within the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) band:

  • Lower bound: AU$76,515 (the new TSMIT successor)
  • Upper bound: AU$141,210
  • Above $141,210: nomination falls under the Specialist Skills stream
  • Below $76,515: nomination falls under the Essential Skills stream (limited eligibility)

What changed in the March refresh

The list is designed to be dynamic — refreshed quarterly. The March 2026 update brought in additions for digital health roles (clinical informaticians, health information managers in tertiary settings) and tightened entries for certain teaching specialisations.

Implication for 189 candidates

189 (Skilled Independent) uses CSOL as its underlying occupation filter. If your ANZSCO code dropped off in March, you cannot lodge a new 189 EOI under that code, but an existing EOI lodged before the list change remains valid pending invitation.
